Welcome back lads and lasses to another year wrapped up and in the books. You know the drill by this point. I’m going to talk about some things I did this year, and hopefully you enjoy my ramblings and show-and-tells. I’m going to do things a bit differently this time and go month by month to talk about what I did in a given month. By this time next year, if I dislike this format, I’ll go back to the regular list. Let’s get started, shall we?

Conclusion

This year, I decided to include some books/audiobooks I read/listened to. I enjoy audiobooks since I can consume them like I do music or a podcast. Just pop in the ol’ earbuds and listen while doing dishes and other chores.

I learned a big lesson this year: take a damn vacation. I went to Japan in November, and while I was there, it hit me.

I haven’t taken a vacation in 10 years.

It’s probably why I’m always exhausted. Whenever I take time off of work, I usually spend it at my house, doing everything I would normally do if I wasn’t on vacation (chores, walking the dog, cooking, etc.) While I get a bit of a break from work, I still have the rest of my life to worry about, all the while thinking about all of the work I’m going to have to do once back to work. Going to Japan this year broke me of that routine. I spent my entire time thinking about having fun. At home, I’d be cleaning some bathrooms, cooking, doom-scrolling, or working. In Japan, my phone was only used for the map applications. In Japan, I was thinking about what kind of foods I want to try for the first time. In Japan, I was present. In some ways, I miss who I was while I was there. My anxieties of every day life melted away. I wasn’t anxious at all. I was excited to learn how to ride the subway and how to get a shinkansen (bullet train) ticket. I’m not at all fluent in Japanese, but I knew enough to ask for directions, order food, and whatnot. It was fun and rewarding knowing that all of that time I’ve spent since 2020 studying wasn’t wasted. I have a loooooong way to go, as I can’t hold a conversation or anything, but just getting to use a bit of すみません and ありがとうございます was exhilarating! I’ll keep working, bit by bit, in 2026. Hopefully, in another 5 years or so, I can hold a bit of a conversation fully in Japanese.

As far as personal projects go, most of my time has been spent on the egg tracker project and this site. I have another thing in the works that’s making me re-visit and re-learn C++ and Qt. I’m hoping to have that done in a few months (progress on anything for me is slow — time is the most valuable commodity). I’ll share that here whenever I’m able. Personal projects have to fight Japanese learning, calls with my mom, meal prep, among other things for time. I am trying to be a bit gentler with myself on this. I’m not 15 anymore. I have a full time job, a mortgage, and a family I gotta worry about, and taking care of my family and friends is orders of magnitude more important to me than anything else.

Until next time, dear reader, I hope you have a terrific new year, and I hope 2026 is kind to you. Take care 👋
